Venue: Eesti Maaülikool / Estonian University of Life Sciences, Tartu, Estonia

Kreutzwaldi 1a (main building) - 033

Participants: 30; academic employees, PhD and MA students. The target group is linguists and philologists involved in teaching English in the institutions of higher education. The course could be beneficial for researchers in areas other than language.

Description:  Designed for language teaching professionals and graduate students who publish, or plan to publish, internationally, this seminar will provide an insider's view of the publishing and writing world, particularly in LSP: editor and reviewer expectations, close analysis of published articles, assistance with selecting topics and making them relevant, suggestions for getting started, revising, and submitting manuscripts, and approaches to teaching professional writing, both for theses and publication. Participants are encouraged to bring their written drafts, even if partial, to the seminar.

Day 1: An overview of international publishing: journals, editors, reviewers and the review process. Introducing some successful articles and sample reviews.

Day 2: Entering the disciplinary conversation; making your topic relevant to an international readership; reviewing selected research; developing an introduction; identifying a methodology and conducting research; human subjects protection and other requirements.

Day 3: Facing writing; working with the "blank page."  Teaching students to face their blank pages - and fill them!

Day 4:  Review; presentation of participant work.
